The Martin family is of great antiquity in England, founded by Martin de Tours about 1300 A.D. (Colonial Families of the United States of America by George Norbury Mackenzie L.L.B., Seaforth Press).

John was a medical doctor. He married Elizabeth Bond, daughter of Thomas Bond M.D., on the 8th or 9th of May 1765 (conflicting dates from two transcription sources). They had two children:

1. Susanna Martin, who died unmarried
2. William Bond Martin, b. 1769, and d. 1835. He married Sarah Ferguson Williams in 1816. William became a member of the Court of Appeals of Maryland; Chief Justice of the 3rd District.
