Civil War Union Army Soldier. he was mustered in as a Private in Company H, 28th Illinois Volunteer Infantry on March 28, 1865, and served until the end of the war.

On March 20, 1883 he filed for a US Army Invalid Veteran Pension (Application #476412, Certificate #1145592).

A son of Jacob Allen (1808 - 1855) and Lucinda Simerson Allen (1812 - 1893), he married Mary Celeste Ward on Dec. 18, 1868 in Terre Haute, Henderson County, IL. Their children were Nellie, Minnie, Fannie, Jeanette, Amy, Edgar Ward, Laura, and Mary Allen.

His second wife, buried with him, was Eva N. Hoffman.
