GRANDDAUGHTER of Issac Safford & Mary "Jane" Edwards.
After her husband John died (Dec. 6, 1944 in Kansas, where they had lived), Mary Jane returned to Lewis Co. WA where her mother and many family members lived.
Jan. 2011, Theola Vollmen relayed the following story; Sometime after Mary Jane's husband died (Dec. 1944), she moved back to Chehalis, WA. She later had an illness that caused her leg to be amputated. The hospital told the family to come get the leg (W.N.Safford note, I assume the family didn't want it cremated). Family member Orlie Anderson retrieved the leg from the hospital and they went to the Salkum Cemetery, where Orlie dug a hole between the graves of Isaac Safford and Sarah Matkins (Mary Jane's mother) and buried the leg there. Theola made a little wooden marker for the "grave" which read; Here lies the leg of Mary Jane Simon.
