"The village was shocked by the death of Harry Van Horne, which occurred at the American Hotel on Friday last. Although in ill health, the end came unexpectedly and cast a deep gloom over the village. He has suffered from consumption for the past two years. He was twenty-five years of age. He was born in Pierstown, but nearly all of his life was spent here except a short time in Cooperstown. He is survived by his widow, his mother, Mrs. E. F. Cary and step-father, E. F. Cary, one sister, Miss Anita Van Horne, one brother, Alfred Van Horne, to whom the deepest sympathy of all is extended in their sad bereavement. He leaves a large number of friends and relatives to mourn his loss. The funeral occurred at the American Hotel, Monday at 1 p. m., the services being conducted by the Rev. Birdsall of Cooperstown. The funeral was largely attended, relatives and friends coming from Richfield Springs and Cooperstown. The business places here were closed during the hour of service. The funeral cortege left for Cooperstown and the remains laid at rest in Lakewood cemetery." [Richfield Springs Mercury (Richfield Springs, NY), June 30, 1904, p. 1]
