Hollis Utah Cox, Sr., 71, passed away Thursday, June 11, 2015. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Hollis Roy Cox on March 4, 1944, in Holdenville, OK, Hollis was a lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, LA. After graduating from Jacksonville High School in Arkansas, Hollis earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from OSU in 1967. He then served in the Air Force in Panama and Vietnam, attaining the rank of captain. In 1973, he completed a PhD in microbiology at LSU, where he remained on faculty as a professor of veterinary medicine and headed the diagnostic lab until his retirement in 2009. An Eagle Scout, Hollis remained active in the Boy Scouts as an adult through troop leadership and membership in the Order of the Arrow. He earned The Vigil Honor, with the vigil name Achowelendam or Deep Thinker, and received the OA Founder's Award and the Silver Beaver Award for Exemplary Service. Hollis is survived by his mother, Molinda Edline Cox; the mother of his children, Debra Cox; his children, Lindy Crace, Chris Cox, and Lauren Cox; his niece, Christi Brazee and children; cousins, Carol Werner, Perralyne Reed, and Paula Sanders; the children of Clifford Powell and Gentry Powell; six grandchildren; and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Hollis Roy Cox; brother, Vernon Cox; sister, Linda Gay Coleman; and son, Hollis Utah Cox, Jr. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, June 15 at 10 a.m. at Sooner Baptist Church at 5824 S.E. 15th St., Midwest City, OK. The Burial will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 16 at Fort Gibson Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Boy Scouts of America or the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
