Two area men are dead as a result of a light plane crash that occurred Sunday night, Oct. 31 between the towns of Margaretsville and Downsville in Deleware County. Killed in the crash were George Arnold, 51, of 62 Pebble Beach Rd., Lakeville, and his son Tracey, 23, of 196 Pierpont Rd., Holcomb. The two had flown to Downsville to visit friends. A search for the Arnolds began when their plane failed to arrive in Lakeville. The crash was discovered by a State Police helicopter about noon Monday, Nov. 1, on Middle Mountain near Margaretsville. Al Weiss of the Catskill Mountain News called this newspaper's office Monday afternoon with the following information: The two took off about 8 p.m. Sunday night from a small private airstrip outside Downsville, in cold, drizzly weather. At a point about one-half mile from takeoff, the engine apparently stalled. From the way that tree tops in the area were -sheared, the plane apparently glided down to the ground. The plane crashed into a large birch tree about one and a half feet thick, at a point about 75 feet from the top of Middle Mountain. The plane crashed close to the bottom of the tree. The plane caught on fire. George Arnold was thrown clear of the wreck and may have lived a few moments after-the crash. Tracy Arnold was strapped into his seat on the plane. Both men were badly burned. They were pronounced dead by Delaware County medical coroner Dr. Harvey Wilbur. A man living over the ridge, about three miles away from the crash site, said he heard an explosion shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday night. Taking part in the rescue operation were the New York State Police Troop C, Margaretsville, Oneonta, and Sidney stations, the Deleware County Sheriff's Department, conservation officers and forest rangers from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and rescue units from Encon.
