Samuel is a son of Samuel and Catherine "Catolyne" (Van Vleck) Seaman. He married Minerva Phillips at Christ Church in Manlius, New York on July 4, 1848. They have five children: Warren, Ida, Clarence, George, and Edith.

During the Civil War he enlisted on August 4, 1862 in the Union Army as a Private in Company A, 24th Wisconsin Regiment, Volunteer Infantry. He was involved in eighteen different battles including Chickamauga and Chattanooga under the command of Arthur MacArthur Jr. He mustered out on June 10, 1865.

Around 1875, he and his family moved from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Kansas City, Kansas, then to Cadmus, Linn County, Kansas where he was a carpenter on a farm. After many years he became an invalid. On doctor's advice, he and his wife moved back to Kansas City, Kansas. For three years they resided at 1022 North 3rd Street before Samuel passed from this life.

Mr S H Seaman, aged 68 years, died at his home, 1022 North Third Street, yesterday morning of asthenia from which he had been ailing for three years. Mr Seaman had lived in the city several years, but spent considerable time in Lynn county on a farm.

His wife and five children are living. His sons are Dr W L Seaman, 343 Minnesota Avenue; C E Seaman, druggist, 1022 Third Street, and George A Seaman, Vinita, Indian Territory. He has two daughters, one in Lynn County and the other in Buffalo, New York.
