Mr. Townsend was born December 4, 1858, at Kelly's Corners, Jackson County, Michigan. From the date of his birth until 1882 he lied at Bethel, Branch county. Immediately after his marriage he and his wife came to Gaylord, where he has practiced law continuously unti his death, serving as prosecutor and judge of probate in the local court, as well as in 1907, being one of the attorneys called to Lansing to redraft the Constitution of the state, at the constitutional convention.
Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Townsend, all of whom, with the widow, survive. They are: Mrs. Claude L. Kniffen of Detroit; Mrs. C. Louis Anderson of Wakefield, Allen J. The life of Mr. Townsend was known to everyone. He was a loving father and husband, and an ideal citizen, believing in the right, and fighting for it at all times regardless of who was affected by it.
October 14, 1932 Mr. and Mrs. Townsend celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and congratulatory letters and gifts were sent from all over the state due to Mr. Townsend's wide acquaintance, procured through a life time of conscientious efforts to be of service to his fellow-man.
Mr. Townsend is gone, but his works and influences will live forever in the hearts and minds of liberty loving citizens and those who know him.
