James J. Bryant enlisted as a Private in Captain Jones Company, 20th Virginia Volunteers, at Richmond, VA on June 3, 1861. Later promoted to Sergeant. Elected Junior 2nd Lieutenant, and subsequently 1st Lieutenant, Company B, 59th Regiment, Virginia Infantry, Confederate States Army, November 1862. Was wounded in the right thigh at Petersburg, VA, May 8, 1864.

Was employed as a coal salesman and resided in Upper Darby and West Philadelphia.
