The 10th of 12 children (siblings: Susannah, b.1821; Elizabeth, b.1823; Sarah, b.1825; Amanda, b.1827; Gilbert, b.1829; George, b.1831; Mercy, b.1833; Eli, b.1836; James, b.1840; Alfred, b.1844; and G.W., b.1846) of George and Remercy (Chidester) Overpack, Silas was a businessman in Manistee. His parents left Pennsyvania around 1850 and settled in Springfield Township, Oakland County, Michigan. In 1867, Silas moved to Manistee and made wagons and sleighs for the lumbering industry. In 1871, he began making pairs of 10-foot high wheels in order for logs to be moved from the forests year round. The same year, Mr. Overpack married Manistee native Miss Millie Magoon, and they had 3 children, Roy, Nellie, and Stella.
