The obituary, which appeared in the Vermont Journal, Windsor, VT on September 28, 1915, is transcribed below:

"Sergeant Robert C. Brown a Victim of the Epidemic at Camp Devens, Mass.
News was received Wednesday of he death of Robert Campbell Brown at Camp Devens, Mass. The cause of death was influenza, a virulent epidemic which has been sweeping over the New England states for the past fortnight.
The news of the death of Sergeant Brown was a shock to the whole community, he being a well and favorable known man. His mother and other relatives live at Barre, Vt., and the body will be taken there for burial.
Sergeant Brown was about 28 years of age and had lived in Windsor for seven years, at the time of his induction into the army, having been the manager of the Windsor Clothing Company.
During his long residence in Windsor, Sergeant Brown had been active for the welfare of the town and leaves a wide circle of friends and acquaintances who are deeply grieved to hear of his sudden death. He was one of the reliable type of people and had made the same record as a soldier that he did as a civilian in the battle of the work-a-day world.
He was a member of the local lodge of Odd Fellows and when he left town was vice president of the Board of Trade organization in Windsor. The war is taking the best, the noblest and the bravest and Sergeant Robert Campbell Brown possessed all these strong attributes. His was the second death in Windsor's quota.
Floral offerings were contributed by the Windsor Board of Trade and the Windsor Lodge, I.O.O.F. No 55. Ad delegation from the latter organization will be present at the funeral service."
