Published March 20, 1914- New Castle Daily Courier, New Castle, IN. P.H. McCormack Dead, The Columbus, Ind., Building Contractor Dies Suddenly. He Was Well Known Here. Columbus, Ind., March 20-P.H. McCormack, 72 years old, the contractor who built the Rose Poly Technic Institute and who has built many county court houses in Indiana, died today at Danville, Ind. His death was caused by acute indigestion following an illness of but one hour. "Published March 21, 1914- New Castle Daily Courier, New Castle, IN." McCormack Led An Active Life, The Well Known Columbus Contractor Came To America When Six Years Old. Erected Many Buildings. In All About Twenty Indiana Court Houses-He Was Also Prominent In Democratic Politics. (Special To The Daily Courier). Columbus, Ind., March 21-The body of P.H. McCormack, wealthy contractor and Democratic Politician, who died at Danville, arrived here last evening for burial. Mr. McCormack, who was 72 years old, came to this country from Ireland with his parents when he was six years old. His parents located at Nashville, Tenn., but in his early manhood he came to Indiana and for several years engaged in bridge building. He built many bridges in Johnson and Bartholomew Counties, some of which are still standing. In 1870, he engaged in gereralcontracting. His first building was the Bartholomew County Court House, which he built in 1872. Among other buildings of note which he built in Indiana were about twenty court houses, among them an addition to the Henry County Court House at New Castle, a hospital for the insane at Evansville and one at Logansport, a big annex to the Indiana Reformatory at Jeffersonville and the St. Denis hotel here, which he owned. An Active Democrat. From the time Mr. McCormack came to Indiana, he was active in local and state Democrat Politics. For two terms represented Bartholomwe County in the state legislature an when he died he was a candidate for the nomination for joint senator from Bartholomew and Decatur Counties. He served one year as mayor of this city and two terms as councilman, and was at one time an unsuccessful candidate for the nomination of treasurer of state. He gave much of his time and money for the upbuilding of this city. He was a Catholic and a liberal giver to his church. He was also a member of the local Masonic and Elks Lodges. He leaves three children, Mrs. Farrell, Harry and Raymond McCormack. The funeral will be held Sunday. Obit furnished by http://www.findagrave.
