She worked with Charleston County Public Library 31 years, serving as branch manager of the John L. Dart Branch from 1990-2011 before becoming manager of the St. Andrews Regional Library. As a child, she attended Emanuel AME Church with her siblings where her mother sang in the choir.

Cythnia's family started the Cynthia Graham Hurd Fund for Reading and Literacy in her honor to benefit Freedom School Partners. Donations can be received online at the Freedom School Partners’ website or by check, made payable to Freedom School Partners Hurd Fund and mailed to Freedom School Partners at P.O. Box 37363, Charlotte, NC 28237.

The family received visitors from 2 - 8 PM on Thursday, June 25, 2015 at her home at 1 Benson St. in Charleston. A wake and family visitation will be 8:30 - 10 PM on Friday at Emanuel AME Church, 110 Calhoun St, Charleston, SC. Her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc., will hold a ceremony during that first half-hour. On Saturday, June 27, 2015 at 11 AM at the church will host a homegoing service and Celebration of Life.

NOTE: She was killed during the mass shooting at Bible Study session at Mother Emanuel AME Church, 110 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC. It happened during a prayer meeting being held at the church on Wednesday night, June 17, 2015 approximately 9 PM.
