Kentucky thoroughbred breeder, whose horse, Alan-a-Dale won the 1902 Kentucky Derby. He partnered with his father in the Ashland Stud. Son of Anne Clay and Henry Clay McDowell. Husband to Mary (Goodloe) McDowell, to whom he was married in 1888.
He was the Great grandson of Henry Clay.
