Painter and first director of the Old Masters Gallery in Dresden. Son of Veit Hans and brother of the painters Ludwig Ferdinand and Eduard. He visited the St Thomas school in Leipzig and started he studies at the Vienna Art Academy in 1811. Together with Wilhelm Müller he left Munich in October 1817 to travel to Italy. In Florence and Venice he met the followers of the Nazarene movement. And traveled with them to Rome. There he painted the frescoes in the Ariosto room in the Villa Massimo. In 1827 he was called to Munich as Professor to teach at the Academy of Fine Arts. He received the order Pour le mérite in 1842 and became director of the Old Masters Gallery in 1846.
