Arthur was truly a Renaissance man. Following a 34-year public service career as Assistant Country Administrator in Santa Cruz, Tulare and Solano counties and County Administrator in Imperial and Tulare counties, Arthur retired at 57 to pursue his love of construction. He obtained a general contractors license in order to build his own and his children’s homes. He liked to say he was in the non-profit business.
Arthur’s other interests included genealogy, authoring a book on his family’s 400 year history in America. He was an accomplished photographer, publishing coffee-table quality photo-books of his many travels with his 2nd wife, Betsy. He loved woodworking and produced works of art including intricately carved fireplace surrounds, china cabinets, tables and bookcases. He was also a painter.
He served in the Navy during the Korean War. He was a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club of Pacific Grove. He was a member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church. A Scotsman, Arthur was a proud member of the Clan MacAlister Society. He finally agreed to wear a kilt at clan functions.
Arthur was devoted to his family. He was always generous, available to them and participated in all aspects of their lives. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Carolyn Alexander.
He is survived by his 2nd wife, Betsy, children Linda DeMichillie (Robert), Kenneth Alexander (Suzanne), Cara Gimlin (Jerry) and grandchildren Ryan and Brandon Alexander, Timothy, Christopher, and Kevin DeMichillie, Tyler Newton, and Matthew and Kathryn Gimlin.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the American Cancer Society, St. Timothy Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice. Celebration- of-Life will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2011 @ 2 pm @ St. Timothy Lutheran Church, 52 Soledad Dr., Monterey, CA.
