Girl Drowned at Valley Resort
SISTERS WERE WADING TOGETHER
Pop's Willow Lake Scene of Sunday Afternoon Tragedy
Alice Semenoff, 12 years old, of 1419 East 71st street, Los Angeles, was drowned while bathing in Pop's Willow Lake, northeast of Van Nuys, shortly after 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon.
Although she was in the water but a few minutes, there was considerable delay, due to lack of telephone facilities in calling the Van Nuys fire department rescue squad and she could not be resuscitated.
The girl had gone to the lake in company with her younger sister, her aunt, Mrs. Anderson, with whom she made her home, and a neighbor of Mrs. Anderson.
According to the report made to police investigators, the sisters were wading on the east side of the lake when Alice stepped into deep water and sank. The sister summoned a guard who began diving for the girl, and located the body in about eleven feet of water.
The body was taken to the Schwimley mortuary and later removed to the county morgue for an autopsy. It will then be taken to Vesper & Son Mortuary, 1930 East First street, for funeral services.

Body of Drowned Girl Taken Home to San Francisco
Lost Life While Wading in Pop's Willow Lake Last Sunday Afternoon
Little Alice Semenoff, 13-year-old vacationist from San Francisco, was returning to her home today in a flower-banked coffin.
The girl, who was accompanied by her father and mother and a younger sister on a happy vacation trip to visit friends here, was drowned Sunday afternoon as the aftermath of a picnic outing at Pop's Willow Lake, northeast of Van Nuys.
Police who investigated her death said she was unable to swim and while wading in deep water, suddenly sank under the surface. Her body was recovered by Donald Cassels, a North Hollywood lad who was swimming nearby.
The girl was visiting an aunt at 1419 East 71st street, Los Angeles, authorities were told by the victim's father, Michael Semenoff.

Pop's Willow Lake
Popular with generations of Valley families, the boating and swimming resort with a dance hall and cafe was along Big Tujunga Wash, upstream from today's Hansen Dam. The lake was opened in 1931 by James A. (Pop) Gautier. It washed away in the 1938 flood that devastated the Valley but was rebuilt in time for a young Marilyn Monroe (then Norma Jeane Baker of Van Nuys High School) to spend wartime dates there with her first husband, Jim Dougherty.
