Admiral Edward Granville George Howard, 1st and last Baron Lanerton of Lanerton was the son of George Howard, 6th Earl of Carlisle and Lady Georgiana Dorothy Cavendish.

He married Diana Harriet Louisa Ponsonby, daughter of Hon. George Ponsonby and Diana Juliana Margaretta Bouverie, on 16 August 1842.
He died on 8 October 1880 at age 70, without issue.
He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Liberal) for Morpeth between 1833 and 1837.
He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Liberal) for Morpeth between 1840 and 1852.
He gained the rank of Admiral in 1870 in the service of the Royal Navy.
He was created 1st Baron Lanerton of Lanerton, Cumberland [U.K.] on 8 January 1874.

On his death, his barony became extinct.
