MURDER OF MRS. OWEN
Slaying of Oak Park Woman in Her Own Home Shocks Community--Husband Witnesses the Crime
Mrs. George F. Owen of 1123 Ontario was murdered about 3 o'clock on Wednesday morning in her own home. Mr. Owen was a witness to the murder and his report of the shocking incident is as follows:
"My wife had been in poor health for two years. She slept in the living-room with all doors and windows open, as that appeared to be best for her comfort. I occupied a bedroom off the dining-room. On Wednesday morning I was awakened by some noise. I jumped out of bed and went to the door of my room that opens into the dining-room. I found the switch and turned on the light in the dining-room. In the living-room I saw a man standing behind my wife with one arm around her and his hand over her mouth. At the instant I turned on the light he turned and pointed a pistol at me. I was startled and half threw up my hands. Then he pressed the pistol to my wife's back. She was biting his finger and he was in pain. He muttered, 'Stop it. I'll kill you.'
"Then he put the pistol, a big black one, to her head and fired. Then he turned to me and I switched off the light. Meanwhile I had seen a second man with a flashlight fumbling at my desk, which was near the couch occupied by my wife. Before I turned off the light I saw them go towards the window, the man who had fired stepping offer the body of my wife, which had crumpled to the floor. They went out the window to the east.
"In the darkness, I found the fone, which is on the table in the dining-room. I jiggled the hook, but could get no response and then I realized that the wire had been cut. I ran upstairs, where a roomer has a fone. I pounded on the door and shouted that burglars were in the house. Then I ran to my sons' room in the rear and awakened them. Then I stopped at the fone and called to them to fone for a doctor that my wife had been shot. Both men were masked, the one working at the desk having a mask with large eye holes, the other had a mask that appeared to be made from the lining of his cap and it just hung down over his nose."
Mr. Owen believes that the fact that he collects rents from a number of apartment buildings caused the tragedy. The thieves, according to his theory, thought he had a considerable sum of money in the house and plotted robbery. In fact, he had no money in the house. He says the robbers were confident and expert and kennel how to use weapons to intimidate their victims.
Mr. Owen and his family have lied in Austin and Oak Park for many years. The murdered woman was his second wife. Two sons, Eben and Charles, twenty and seventeen years of age, by a former marriage, lived at home and were in the house when the murder was committed. Before the war he built and apartment house on Ontario street, just west of Marion, and this venture was so successful that he acquired other buildings and for ten years he has devoted all his time to his property.
The coroner's inquest was held on Wednesday afternoon at Dreschler's. The jury returned an open verdict, simply finding that Mrs. Owen came to her death from a pistol shot fired by an unknown person. Oak Park and Chicago detectives are working on the case and they have important clews which have not been mentioned in any report in Chicago newspapers and the confidently expect it will result in arrests and confessions.
