Following the death of her husband James Oliver Ward, she married Dwight Hawkins "Frank" Mott on July 7, 1869, as she was teaching in the Boyd County school system. She was 25 and he was 41 years old. They lived in Ceredo, West Virginia in a large Victorian home on 1st street across from the church. In 1897, Kate spent a year upstairs in their Victorian home, refusing all entreaties from Frank and the children to leave her room. Her husband Frank Mott died in February 1912 at an age of 82. She lived until 1934, passing away in the upstairs room of the old home across the street from the church.
