Pfc. John L. Morris, of the Williams Community in Red River Parish, attended Springville High School in Coushatta and Booker T. Washington High in Shreveport. He joined the Army after graduation and was assigned to duty in South Vietnam in December 1968, where he served as a member of Company C, 3rd Battalion, 39th Infantry Division. On a March 7, 1969 reconnaissance in force mission in Dinh Tuong Province, he moved under intense fire in a mined area to provide aid to wounded comrades, and carried several to safety, earning the Bronze Star with "V" device for his bravery. He was swept to his death by a swift river current less than two weeks later. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roosevelt Morris Sr.
