James was a descendant of "Old John" Godbold, an English immigrant who retired from the sea about age 70, married, had many children and established a plantation in South Carolina. He lived to about age 100.

Both of James' parents were born in South Carolina and were part of a general migration of many Godbolds and allied families out of South Carolina to Alabama and into Texas. James became the executor of his father's will 14 May 1853 in Wilcox County, Alabama. James was from a wealthy planter family; after the civil war he was in reduced circumstances.

All the known children of James and Mary Godbold were born in Wilcox County, Alabama, and between 1868-1870 the family moved to Texas. James lost his wife between 1870-1880 and is found living with his son Robert Fletcher.
