His first years of schooling were completed at the New Town Elementary School. At Dunbar High School he received his high school training. She entered Bishop College of Marshall, Texas in September 1942, where he studied until he was inducted into the U.S. Navy (World War II) in November 1943.
During this period of active duty he served in both the Asiatic Pacific area and the European Middle Eastern area. He was awarded the Victory Medal and received a Citation for Heroic Conduct aboard the U.S.S. Saratoga.
Upon discharge from the Navy, he re-entered Bishop College and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1948.
He was later married to Miss Iona V. Richardson, to which union five children were born: Yvette, Sherian, Vanessa, Renee, and Dwayne Virgil. His wife was six months pregnant with their sixth child, William Everett at the time of his death.
His career as a teacher began in Greenville, Texas. He later served as teacher in the New Town Elementary School, Dunbar High School and the Theron Jones School in Texarkana Texas. Currently he was teaching at the Sunny Side Elementary School in Houston Texas.
As a son, a brother, a student, a sailor, a husband, a father, a teacher......he lived his life fully but briefly.
