Written by my Mother, about her Mother

I couldn't have had a better mother and she died too young. She was anxious to become a grandmother and she died when Chris was 5 months old. She had a very unhappy childhood as her father was an alcoholic and died when I was 2 years old of cirrhosis of the liver from alcohol. Her mother was a flora Dora girl and drank a lot too. My mother had to quit school in 5th grade because she was very sick. However my mother was a reader and was always reading and learned so much. She used to read all the time, mysteries, books by Louise Mae Alcott. Like Little Women and nice family stories also.

She worked during Christmas in five and ten cent stores, as a sales lady. She was a good wife and loved to sing and could whistle and yodel beautifully most songs. She loved canaries. She was a member of the American legion auxiliary and very active in it. She was a Christian and she and I were baptized on mothers day together. she was a Sunday school teacher in the First Reformed Church in Hackensack, N.J.

When I got old enough, my mother and I would go to New York on day trips. That picture on the right where she is sitting next to a fountain, was taken in Central Park in New York. We used to take family trips a lot, as my dad liked to sight see. We used to go to Bear Mountain in New York State Park where they enjoyed Roller skating. They enjoyed going on the lake in row boats and watching the bears in places where they could roam.

She was very proud to be a grandmother, even though it was for a short time. Frank and his wife, Evelyn Virginia Eckhardt (Hallstein), had two children; a daughter Geraldine Eckhardt and a son, Robert Eugene Eckhardt.
She was very patriotic and so proud of her son and daughter, who both joined the Army during World War II.
She had four grandchildren all together, Chris, Richard, Sandy and Robert. Great grandchildren, Michael, Kelsey, Iris, and Mason.
