Simon was a carpenter by trade. He apparently had service in the military before 1845. He re-enlisted age 27 as a Sergeant in the 3rd U. S. Artillery regiment on 4 February 1845, and served during the Mexican-American War. He was discharged on expiration of term of service on 4 February 1850.

He died age 40 of "Consumption," per Cemetery records. His grave in his father's plot, near his parents, is unmarked.
