Thomas Couch, Jr. was born between 1705 and 1714, probably in Virginia and likely died in 1776, the year he made his will in Enoree, The Old Ninety Six District, South Carolina. His will is dated 12 February 1776. The portion of the Old Ninety Six District he and his family were living in is now in Spartanburg County, South Carolina.

During the Revolutionary War in South Carolina, wills were generally not probated from the Old Ninety Six District, until after the war ended. Thomas Couch, Jr.'s will was probated 30 January 1784.

Thomas Couch, Jr. can be found first in Brunswick County, Virginia. We know that his father, Thomas Couch, Sr. received a 566 acre land grant in Brunswick County, Virginia, from King George II of England, which was recorded in 1731, but that the land was likely platted by Thomas Couch, Sr. as early as 1720 because letters of patent were filed by Thomas Couch on the 566 acres at the courthouse in Williamsburg, Virginia in 1720.

In 1736 Thomas Couch, Sr. sold 150 acres of the 566 acres to his son, Thomas Couch, Jr., as recorded in Brunswick County, Virginia, Court Order Book, 1732-1737, page 137 – "Thomas Couch Sr. (his Mark) to Thomas Couch Jr. (His Mark) for 5 pounds, 150 Acres in St. Andrews Parish, on the south side of Couche's Creek, joining Wm. Stroud, Thomas Lloyd, Thomas Couch and includes Thomas Couch, Sr.'s plantation." The deed itself is found in Brunswick County, Virginia, Deed Books, Volume I, 1732-1745, page 247 & 293).

In 1739 Thomas Couch, Sr. and Thomas Couch, Jr. sold their 566 acres of land in Brunswick County, Virginia. The sales record can be found in Brunswick County Court Order Book 1, pages 530-532, and a portion of the record reads as follows: "Indenture made the 2nd day of August, 1739, between Thomas Couch, Sr., Thomas Couch, Jr., and Drury Stith, Gentleman, for 30 pounds, conveying 566 acres on the Pine Lick Branch (John Stroud's corner, Thomas Lloyd's line, Talbott's line, Morris's corner), same being granted to the said Thomas Couch, Sr., by Letters of Patent at Williamsburgh, 1720."

Thomas Couch, Sr. and his wife, Elizabeth, had the following confirmed children: (1) Thomas Couch, Jr; (2) William Couch; (3) James Couch; and (4) Mathew Couch. They may have had other children, but only these four can be confirmed. Thomas Couch, Jr., William Couch, James Couch, and Mathew Couch next show up on land grant and tithe records in Orange County, North Carolina, around the middle of the 18th century.

In 1766, Thomas Couch, Jr. received a 300 acre land grant along the Enoree River in the Old Ninety Six District, South Carolina. Shortly thereafter his brothers, James and Mathew, moved to the Old Ninety Six District, South Carolina, and live close to their brother.

From land records, we know that Thomas Couch, Jr. was married to a woman named "Mary." There is little information available on Mary. It is estimated that Mary was born about 1715 + or - a few years.

There are a number of Deed records in the Old Ninety Six District, South Carolina, involving Thomas Couch, Jr.

We know Thomas Couch, Jr. is buried in the Couch-Stroud Cemetery on his 300 land grant from this deed record: Sep 23, 1796, F-189, p 189-191, Joseph Couch (Spartanburgh) to John Petty Poole, (Union Co) for 100 (~7) sold 200 ac on Enoree R & part of two tracts, (1) 150 ac is part of 300 ac grant May 7, 1767 Gov Charles Montague to Thos Couch des, & (2) 50 ac is part of grant to Charles Hunt. One ac excepted where Joseph Couch's father is buried & one of "his" children. Wit Spencer Brown, Seth Petty Pool, & Jesse Petty Poole. Signed Joseph Couch's mark. Wit Oath May 15, 1798 Spencer Brown to Thos Farrow Rec Oct 29, 1798."

What the Sep 23, 1796 record says is that Joseph Couch sold a total of 200 acres of land to John Petty Poole. The 200 acres was made up of 150 acres from Ole Thomas Couch's 300 acre land grant and 50 acres from a grant to Charles Hunt. Then it says that One acre is "excepted" where Joseph Couch's father (Ole Thomas Couch) is buried and one of "his" children. The one acre cemetery was thus not included in the sale, and as such, has never been sold.

THOMAS COUCH, Jr. and MARY had the FOLLOWING CHILDREN:

William (b: ca 1738/1739)
Thomas III (b: ca 1739/1740)
Judith (b: ca 1740/1741)
John (b: ca 1745-1750)
Elizabeth (b: ca 1746)
Martha "Patty" (b: ca 1748/1753)
Joseph (b: ca 1751-1759)
Child deceased (b: ca 1753)
Drury (b: ca. 1755/1757)

We know from Ole Thomas Couch's will, dated February 1776, that his son, John Couch inherited one-half Thomas Couch, Jr.'s (Ole Thomas) 300 acre Royal Land Grant, and that his son, Drury Couch, inherited the other 150 acres.

So let's trace which 150 acres contained the 1 acre cemetery. The cemetery is on the lower portion of the 300 acres, about one-fourth mile to the northeast of the Enoree River. We find this Deed Record where JOHN COUCH sold his 150 acres to Joseph Couch: Jan 5, 1792, C-112, p 112-113, John Couch (Spartanburgh) to Joseph Couch (same) for 100~ sold 150 ac on Enoree R, half of 300 ac grant May 7, 1767 Gov Charles G Montague to Thomas Couch, desc, and 50 on E side of Enoree R;, grant to Charles Hunt & leased to John Couch. Wit Aaron Casey & Isaac Couch. Signed John Couch. Wit Oath Oct 22, 1792 John Couch to Thomas Farrow. Rec Apr 15, 1793. Therefore, it is John Couch's 150 acres where the one acre cemetery was set aside.

Now we have to find out where Drury Couch's 150 acres was located. Was it in the south or north 150 acre section of the 300 acre land grant? We find this DEED RECORD when Drury sold his 150 acres: Jan 21, 1792, D-5, p 5-6, Drury Couch (Spartanburgh) to Benjamin Rhodes (same) for 40~ 10s sterling sold 150 ac on Both sides Fort Shoals Cr, grant Gov Charles G Montague to Thomas Couch, dec & by will to Drury Couch. Wit: Christopher Rhodes & John Gorzvel. Signed Drury Couch's mark. Wit Oath Oct 4, 1793 Drury Couch to (not given) Rec Oct 13, 1794.

NOTICE that Drury Couch's 150 acres was "on both sides of Fort Shoals Creek." Fort Shoals Creek runs through the northern portion of the 300 acres. Fort Shoals Creek is to the northeast of Ridge Road. Thus we have proven that the cemetery was on the portion of Ole Thomas Couch's property that Joseph Couch owned, and that Joseph Couch purchased this property from his brother, John Couch.

By determining that Drury Couch's 150 acre portion of the 300 acre grant was in the northeast section of the land, we can conclude that John Couch's 150 acre portion was on the portion of the 300 acre grant closest to the Enoree River, and this pinpoints the location of the one acre cemetery –
