Former Sunderland, Arsenal and England centre forward. He began his career with Arsenal (Woolwich Arsenal)where he played briefly, before falling out with his manager over expenses. Moving to Northfleet United he saw out the 1909-10 season, he then moved to Leyton. It was here he was spotted by Sunderland, signing for them in 1911. During his spell at Roker Park, he won the 1912-13 Championship as well as losing in the 1913 F.A. Cup final. Then, in 1925, Buchan signed for Herbert Chapman's Arsenal. His three seasons at Highbury saw another defeat in the F.A. Cup final of 1927, but scored 49 goals in 102 appearances. Along with Chapman, Buchan developed Arsenals hugely successful WM formation, leading to the clubs dominance of the 1930's. Buchan played for England six times, netting an impressive four goals. Following his retirement, he became a football journalist, most famous for his magazine 'Charlie Buchan's Football Monthly'. He passed away in 1960, whilst on holiday in Monte Carlo. His ashes were later repatriated to his native London, to rest at Golders Green Crematorium.
