William enlisted in Company H 54th Ohio Volunteer Infantry out of Cincinnati on May 2, 1864. He died during the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain.

On August 15, 2016 Stephen Roediger shared this information with me via email. He was visiting the Kennesaw Mountain Memorial (where I had thought Wm was buried) and "The Cemetery Director assured me that the cemetery is only about 50 years old and that no civil war soldiers were buried there. Additionally, when I spoke with a park ranger at the Kennesaw National Battlefield Park, she explained that soldiers on both sides of the conflict were interred at the Marietta National Cemetery which is in downtown Marietta GA about 5 miles from the battle site. If they could be identified, their headstones has their information and if their bodies could not be identified their headstones simply read "Unknown Soldier." I went there in hopes of finding William's headstone, and I can tell you that there are many unknown soldiers buried there." Stephen was unsuccessful in identifying William's burial site.
