Marion Elizabeth Rose was born on November 14, 1917, in Great Falls, Montana, the child of Charles Robert and Florence A. Devereaux. Her mother died in 1918 when she was 1 year old and her father is said to have abandoned her soon after. She was raised by her grandmother Sarah Burke nee Murphy and her second husband Alfred Burke.

Marion married Lorin Anderson O'Donnell on June 29, 1940, in Sutherland, Iowa. They had five children in 15 years.
