Jackie was a smart and kind, 9 year old little boy. He had been going to school in Goleta, California since Kindergarten, and was a student at Brandon School for a couple of years. The Goleta Union School District was mourning the loss of its former student, who left the area several months before his death. The school district expressed shock at Jack's death. His teachers described Jack as a very bright young boy who was very inquisitive, he loved basketball and science.
The boyfriend of a Hagerstown, Maryland woman has been charged with murder in Jack's death. Police say the little boy was handcuffed and beaten unconscious for eating the boyfriend's daughters birthday cake without permission. Jack's mother met her sons killer on the internet five months earlier. Tragically, she moved from California to Maryland with Jack.
It was reported that Jack had extensive head injuries and bruises all over his body. Poiice also stated that Jack was handcuffed up to three hours a day for a week prior to the deadly beating. A doctor who examined Jack said that his injuries were consistent with torture. Police say Robert Leroy Wilson, 30, beat Jack again on June 30th after the boy's uncle Jacob Barajas, 23 handcuffed him to a dining room chair. Jack's mother Oriana Iris Garcia, 26 was reported to have approved of the harsh discipline for Jack. His mother also delayed medical treatment by sending away an ambulance that responded hours earlier. Jack later died at the Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
Jack's mother and uncle have also been charged with murder and child abuse in connection with his death. They are being held on a $5 million bail in Maryland.
UPDATE; March, 2016 - After pleading guilty, murderer Wilson was sentenced to 30 years in prison for killing Jack. It was the maximum sentence for second degree murder in the state of Maryland.
