David Lamar "Dave" Poindexter September 7, 1925--July 3, 2015, Waveland, MS David Lamar Poindexter, age 89, died on July 3, 2015, at his home in Waveland, Mississippi in the company of his family. His beloved wife of 67 years, Laurie Orr Poindexter, preceded him in death on April 15, 2014. David was a Marine who served in the South Pacific during World War II and a chemical engineering graduate of the University of Michigan. He and Laurie raised 5 sons and lived in Bay St. Louis from 1957 until 1991, weathering both Hurricane Betsey and Hurricane Camille. David retired in 1982 as a refinery manager of the Domino Sugar refinery in Chalmette, Louisiana. He and Laurie then began a 30-year retirement adventure, with Harbour Island and Bay St. Louis as their base and, later, Banner Elk, North Carolina as their second home. They traveled most of the world's continents together, and David rode his Gold Wing Motorcycle through most of North America, including Canada, Mexico, and Alaska. While in Banner Elk, both were heavily involved as volunteers at the local community college, Lees/McRae, and Meals on Wheels. They returned together to the Bay-Waveland area in 2012. David was born on September 7, 1925, in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Lamar Stratton Poindexter and Ione Biggers Poindexter. He was one of seven children and has one surviving sister, Mary Pugh, and numerous nieces and nephews in Chattanooga and across the United States. His son Stephen Poindexter died in 1995. His survivors include sons Michael (Sherry) Poindexter of Golden CO, D. Stratton (Helen) Poindexter of Bend, OR, Gregory (Cynthia) Poindexter of Waveland, MS, and Bradley (Susie) Poindexter of Tuscaloosa, AL, as well as 6 grandchildren, Kathryn, Leigh, Elizabeth, David, Mary and Steven, 2 step-grandchildren, Jason Hebert and Scott Kirby, 1 great-grandchild, Max Riojas and 2 step-great-grandchildren, Jaidee Hebert and Sophia Hebert. Davids remains will be cremated and interred with Laurie's in Bay St. Louis. Both of their names, along with their son Stephen's, are entered in memory on the granite memorials of Christ Episcopal Church in Bay St. Louis. A private family service will be held. Edmond Fahey Funeral Home in Bay St. Louis, MS (228) 467-9031, is in charge of arrangements. -
