John R. Alther, 95, of 649 North Franklin Street, Chambersburg, PA, died at 11:10 PM Tuesday, November 25, 2008 in Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where he resided for the past month. Born March 31, 1913 in Chambersburg, he was a son of the late Clarence and Mary Rossman Alther. John served with the Merchant Marines and then with the U.S. Army during WWII. He was employed at the former Chambersburg Laundry and Geyer Lumber Company for a number of years and then as a custodian with the Chambersburg Area School District at Buchanan Elementary School and King Street Elementary School. His beloved wife, Isabelle Claudy Alther preceded him in death in August of 1987.

The wedding took place on Saturday, February 6, in Frederick, Md., the ring ceremony being performed by Rev. Dr. Charles E. Wehler, pastor of the Presbyterian Church of that place. They were attended by Mr. and Mrs. John Watson of Oakley Manor, Chambersburg, R. R. 7, and Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Claudy of Hagerstown. For the present Mr. and Mrs. Alther will reside at the home of the bride.
