Sylvia Frances Clapham, daughter of John and Frances (Dostal) Lisa, was born on a farm near Cainsvile, Mo. on Dec. 12, 1890. She was the tenth child of a family of eleven children. Sylvia grew to womanhood in the Lynn school district where she completed her elementary education. When she was a young lady, she became a member of the Banner Methodist Church.

On March 1, 1914, she was united in marriage to Benjamin Seaton Clapham. Their first home was on a farm in the Banner community, a few miles south and west of Cainsville, where they resided for a few years. Ben and Sylvia next moved to a farm southwest of Mt. Moriah, Mo. While living there for several years, two children were born to bless their home; a son, Carroll Wayne, who died in infancy, and a daughter, Emelia Kethleen. This home was destroyed by fire. In 1937, Ben and Sylvia and their daughter, moved to Alamo Oaks, Calif., where Ben was employed as a carpenter. After returning from Calif. in 1939, they built a new home in Mt Moriah where they lived for a number of years. Sylvia placed her church membership in the Mt. Moriah Methodist Church where she enjoyed working with the Ladies' Aid Society. She was a faithful member and worker in her church for many years. Sylvia loved her home and her flowers and was a devoted wife and mother.

She was faithful to her Master and reared her daughter in a manner pleasing to Him. She was ever ready to help others in any way that she could.

In 196l, Sylvia and Ben moved to Tabor, Iowa, to be near their daughter and family who were a never ending joy to them. She loved them all dearly, the daughter, son-in-law, and two granddaughters. She and Ben celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary there in 1964.

Sylvia was preceded in death by their infant son, Carroll Wayne; her father and mother, five sisters and five brothers, of which two died in infancy. Her death marks the passing of the last member of her parental family. She is survived by her companion, Ben, of the home in Tabor, Iowa; their daughter, Emelia Kathleen; two granddaughters, Joan Kayleen and Barbara Pauline, and son-in-law, Frank J. Whitehill, all of Tabor, Iowa.
