Vivian LaVera Hummel was born October 3, 1921, near Mattson, Texas, to R. B. and Emily Belle Guess. She was the 6th of 11 children. She died January 26, 2008, at St. Anthony's Hospital in Rockford, Illinois. Her home for the last 61 years was Sterling, Illinois.

She was married to Osborne William "Bud" Hummel on June 16, 1945, at Spring Valley Farm, North of Sterling, near Jordan School. They met in Midland, Texas, during World War II, where LaVera taught First Grade and Bud was stationed in the U.S. Army Air Force.

LaVera received her degree from North Texas State in Denton, Texas, in 1942.

They had three children. Gregory William Hummel, married to Teresa Lynn Beveroth, both from Evanston, Illinois; Marcus Guess Hummel, married to Nadine Ann Jeczalik, both from Hanover Park, Illinois, and Jeannie Kay Rhodes, married to James Alexander "Tad" Rhodes, both from Norman, Oklahoma. LaVera had six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by two brothers, Hal Lindo Guess of Weinert, Texas, and Roy Rebus Guess of Haskell, Texas, and two sisters, Violet LaVern of Weinert, Texas and Rita Mae Hughes of Haskell, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents and two brothers and four sisters.

Bud and LaVera Hummel moved to Sterling in 1947. She worked as a Third Grade elementary teacher at Como and Emerson schools from 1965 to 1981. In retirement, she was active at Wesley United Methodist Church. Family defined her. Each succeeding generation appreciated the warmth of her love and her enduring wisdom. She was a person marked by great faith and quiet dignity. We often encountered her students in and around Sterling and many would recall fondly the year they had spent with her as their Third Grade teacher.

Her visitation will be at the Schilling Funeral Home, 702 First Avenue, Sterling, IL, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 1, 2008. Her funeral service will be at Wesley United Methodist Church, 2200 16th Avenue, Sterling, IL at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 2, 2008.
