Effie Lee (Dean) Benton was born August 10, 1897 in Cayce, Mississippi to George Charlie Dean and Rachel (Shears) Dean. Effie joined a brother, Walter. And a sister Ruby, joined the family in 1901.
Her father was a share cropper and her mother a homemaker. Charley was born a slave on the plantation of Joseph Dean of Marshall County , Mississippi, in 1858. His wife Rachel was born about 1865 in the same county.
Married 24 August 1918, in Marshall County, Mississippi to James Albert Benton, the newlyweds made their home in Collierville, TN not far from where they both grew up.
The Benton's had seven children, Herman 1920, Sherman 1923, Rachel 1924, Ella V. 1926, Charlie Joe 1929 and a son who was stillborn in 1934. Sadly, Charlie Joe passed away just after he turned 7 months old.
Effie was a loving mother to her children and enjoyed living near other family members. Even as she lay suffering the ravages of Tuberculosis she sought to give her children a part of her each day. Attended by Dr. S.W. McCall, she died quietly on the 40th birthday of her husband James, July 10th 1937.
Mourned by family and friends, Effie was laid to rest on July 12, 1937, in New Sharron Cemetery where her darling little boy, Charlie Joe was buried just six years before.
“Your children mourned and comforted one another as they sought your tender, loving spirit, in the heavens above. One by one they heard your voice and heeded your desire and sought a better life in the great migration that brought all of them to Rockford, Illinois, except Ella who went to Saint Louis to make a new home. James later joined them and his siblings in Illinois.
It has been seventy-eight years since you left us and your story does not end here Grandmother; I seek you because you are so much of who I am. My heart has always longed to know you, to see your face, to hear your voice. Whisper to me darling sweet grandmother, what it is that you would have me know, as I seek to honor you through our family history.

With love beyond measure,
