Casper Theater Man Succumbs

Edward J. Schulte, 66, pioneer resident of Casper and widely known business and civic leader, died Tuesday night at Billings HOspital, University of Chicago, where he recently had undergone an operation.

Mrs. Schulte and his son Russell of Casper and his daughter, Mrs. Richard Nichols, of New London, Conn., were with him at the time of death.

Mr. Schulte was president of Rialto Theater, Inc., which operates theaters in Wyoming and Colorado, and was a vice president and director of Gibraltar Enterprises, Inc., which has theater affiliations in these two states and in Nebraska and New Mexico. He was chairman of the board of the First National Bank of Riverton and a director of the Casper National Bank.

Until recent years, when his health necessitated limitations of his activities, Mr. Schulte was active in many projects of a civic nature. He was a past president and director of the Casper Chamber of Commerce, was one of the organizers of the Better Casper Association, serving as its first president, and was state chairman of the National War Fund during World War II.

Born In Wisconsin
Born in Bloomington, Wis., in September, 1886, Mr. Schulte came to Casper at the age of 12 and made this city his home since that time. The family had moved from Bloomington to Gordon, Neb., where they remained a short time and where his father operated a grocery store and blacksmith shop and sold farming equipment. They afterwards went to Edgemont, Neb., and came to Casper in March, 1898.

Mr. Schulte was the son of Mr and Mrs. J. E. Schulte, his father having established the Schulte Hardware Co. here. He died a few years ago in California.

Mr. Schulte was one of three brothers whose careers and interests have been identified prominently with the business history of the community. He obtained his early education in Casper, graduating from Natrona County High School in 1904. For many years he was associated with his father in the Schulte Hardware Co. and later joined in operation of the Schulte Brothers Confectionery Co., located on South Center Street between Second and Midwest. Afterwards he went with the Webel Commercial Co. as secretary and general manager, remaining in that capacity until entering the theater business. The Webel store was located at the site where the Rialto Theater now stands. The theater was constructed in 1922.

In that era before sound films, Mr. Schulte employed an all-lady orchestra, which was directed by Mrs. Melvin Todd. The orchestra was disbanded when sound films came in.

Expanded Chain
In the late 20's Mr. Schulte added to his theater holdings, purchasing the America and Rex, and in the 30's the company expanded further by acquiring other theaters in Wyoming. It was at this time, too, that Rialto Theatre, Inc., affiliated with Gibraltar Enterprises, which numbers among its members independently owned theaters in the four-state area which it serves. Mr. Schulte was one of the organizers of Gibraltar.

Throughout the years Mr. Schulte held steadfast faith in the future of Casper and deomonstrated this faith on numerous occasions. It was his aim to maintain a high standard of theater operation and he was alert to make improvements at his various enterprises to keep abreast of progress in the industry. Remodeling of the Rialto Theater where he started in the moving picture business, was underway at the time of his death.

Golfing, fishing and hunting were among his favorite diversions.

Director of Bank
He was elected to the board of directors of the Casper National Bank in 1939, maintaining his place on the board until his death.

In 1943 he was named treasurer of the National War Fund, an organization consolidating various fund-raising campaigns by war related agencies, and the following year was named state chairman.

Mr. Schulte is survived by his wife, Margaret; a son, Russell E. Schulte, of Casper; a daughter, Mrs. Richard Nichols, New London, Conn.; two brothers, Arthur A. Schulte and Ralph L. Schulte of Casper, and a sister, Mrs. Arthur O. Park of Csper; and five grandchildren of New London and Casper.

Funeral services will be announced later by the Horstman-Gay Mortuary. Services and interment will be in Casper.
