John Harvey was born in Jackson County, Tennessee January 17,1845, son of Benjamin Franklin Chaffin and Rebecca Lovall Chaffin, married Nancy Caroline Williams (b. February 13, 1846, White County, Tennessee; d. January 12, 1931, Jackson County, Tennessee), daughter of Johnny Williams.

He was born with a severe birth defect (club feet). It was not to be a handicap in his life. His preliminary education was in the schools of Jackson County, Tennessee and then, a graduate of Burreitt College, Spencer, Tennessee. He served as Register of Deeds (1876-1884), County Court Clerk (1884-1906) for Jackson County. Both were members of the Church of Christ. John H. Chaffin departed this life November 26, 1909, and along with his wife are buried in the Pharris Cemetery in Jackson County, Tennessee.

Their children were 7 in number. They are: John Franklin Chaffin (b. May 24, 1871; d. September 18, 1908) married first, Nancy E. Birdwell on October 20,1889. They had 2 children, James Whitman Chaffin and Lola Essie Chaffin.
He married second, Susan Naomi Isabell Burgess. They had 1 son, Lewis Chaffin.
Riley Columbus Chaffin (b. May 4, 1874; d. December 4, 1922) married Dicy Lavonia Fox on September 3, 1893. They had 6 children: John Wesley Chaffin, Garrett Chaffin, Flora Chaffin, Everette Chaffin, L. A. Chaffin, and
Olee Chaffin.
Ollie Chaffin (b. June 26, 1880; d. November 7, 1968) married James Morton Dennis, II (Jim). They had 3 children: Ethel Dennis, Ola Caroline Dennis, and James Morton Dennis, Ill.
Nannie Chaffin (b. 1886; d. 1903) married Frank Birdwell. They had no children.
Martha Angeline Chaffin (b. October 10, 1883; d. December 5, 1970) married Alfred Cleveland Kirby. They had 5 children: Amy Kirby, Averette Kirby, Lyda Kirby, Donald Kirby, and Dalton Kirby.
Marion Chaffin killed by a pole of wood accidentally dropped at age eleven (11).
Mary Chaffin died in infancy.
