James Joseph Boyd was a son of James Davis Boyd. His mother was Harriet Robbins, first wife of James D. Boyd, but James Joseph never knew her. He spent his early childhood in South Carolina. His father married again and James Joseph had a stepmother he knew, Rachel Edella Minter Boyd. When James Davis moved the family to Mississippi in 1856, and settled in Choctaw County, James Joseph was about 10 years old. He married, first around 1867 in Yazoo County, MS., second in about 1884, and third on August 29, 1886.
