Truett was the son of Ollie Myrtice Watson and Rev Willis Harley Hughes. He was a talented pianist and had a beautiful voice. He never learned to read music, but could play almost anything "by ear" according to family. While attending college, he would often sing and play the piano at supper clubs, wedding receptions and various other events to earn extra money.

He also enjoyed sketching and even drew paper dolls and their clothes for me. His favorite thing to do was to fly an airplane and he did crop dusting full time for a while in the Lubbock, Texas area and later often did crop dusting on his days off from his regular job.

After serving in the Navy in World War II, he did underwater ship repairs in Houston for a while and later had a furniture store in Lubbock for several years. He was working in furniture sales in San Antonio at the time of his death from an automobile accident.

His first wife was Marcella Jeanne Phillips, married 30 Jun 1938 in Tulia, Swisher, Texas, no record of any children. She married Joe Ervin Robertson, Jr., in 1944.

He married Mrs Billie Sue (Eaves) Kornegay on August 22, 1941 in Beaumont, Jefferson, Texas, and they had two children, Susann and John Philip "Phil" Hughes.

After Billie's death, Truett married Josephine Louise "Jo" Timms in Lubbock, Texas, and they had two children, Donnie Lee Hughes and Deborah Mozelle Hughes.

Truett also had a stepdaughter, Sylvia Lane Kornegay, who was the daughter of Billie and her first husband, Thomas "Tom" Herndon Kornegay.
