Durand, June 25.--The death of Mrs. Rose Ann Dolan, widow of the late John Dolan, occurred late Sunday night, due to the infirmities of advanced age. Mrs. Dolan was born in Ireland June 20, 1837, and came to this county at the age of 10 years. With her brother and sister she settled at Hartford, Conn., where she grew to womanhood, later coming west where she was united in marriage to John Dolan, the couple settling on a large farm in Laona township. In later years the homestead was turned over to their sons and Mrs. Dolan bought the John Steves mill farm in Durand, where she lived with son Martin at the time of her death, Mr. Dolan having preceded her to the beyond in 1904. She was the mother of eleven children, six sons and five daughters. One daughter, Mrs. Rose Oakley, and three sons, Christopher, John and Joe, are dead, and the following survive a fond mother: Mrs. Mary McKearn of Beloit, Mrs. Julia Walsh and Mrs. Elizabeth Ashton of Durand, Mrs. Theresa Howe of Hamburg, N. Y., James Dolan of Seward, and Thomas and Martin of Durand, besides thirty-two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and other sorrowing relatives and friends of which she had many, being of a nature whom all loves and respected. She was a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic church and funeral services will be held from there Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock, with interment in Beloit Catholic cemetery. Mrs. Dolan was familiarly known to all as "Grandma Dolan," and sincere regret at her demise is expressed by the entire community in which she was held in high regard. Three of her grandsons are in the service; Lieut. Howard Ashton, formerly of Rockford, and two McKearn boys of Beloit, Miss Cora Ashton, a granddaughter, who is a train nurse, cared for her during her illness. (Rockford Republic, [Rockford, Illinois] Tuesday, June 25, 1918, Page 3.) (Accessed and transcribed 24 February 2017 by Mary Jo.)
