He was the son of Max (Mordechai Avraham Yeshaya) Groner and Rose (Menucha Rochel) Groner.

Groner was a gunner on B-29 #44-61554, with the 20th Air Force, 58th Bombardment Wing, 40th Bombardment Group, 45th Bombardment Squadron. Two weeks after Japan surrendered, this crew volunteered to fly from their base on Tinian carrying desperately needed supplies to Prisoner of War camps near Yawata Japan, where allied prisoners were still awaiting liberation. In dense fog and pouring rain the B-29 attempted to cross the Sobo Mountain Range, but clipped a mountain peak and crashed, bursting into flames near Mount Oyaji. All aboard were killed.

The remains of all crew members were wrapped and buried by the locals in a temporary burial ground and six Crosses was placed in the ground, on the 27th and 28th of August the following year (1946) the American Military Division in Fukuoka City came to the crash site to confirm and remove all the remains and personal items. After another year all the bodies were identified.

Solly (Shlomo) was buried in Jerusalem, the city of his birth, in the First Old Jerusalem Cemetery.
