CASTRO VALLEY, Calif. - Mary Alice Greiner-Elek, 47, beloved daughter of Calvin and Joan Greiner of Rapid City, died Monday, April 15, 2002, at San Ramon Regional Hospital in San Ramon, Calif. It was a sudden loss due to acute respiratory distress syndrome.
Mary was born April 1, 1955, in Traverse City, and grew up in Elk Rapids. She graduated from Elk Rapids High School. Mary loved all sports and had played women's softball in her younger years. Mary had lived in Florida, Nevada, and for the last 24 years, she had lived in Castro Valley, Calif., where she worked for Marriott Hotels and volunteered at a "no kill" cat shelter.
Mary is survived by her parents; her brothers, Michael (Anita) Greiner of Traverse City, Mark (Joanne) Greiner of Elk Rapids and Calvin (Tandra) Greiner II of Gladstone; her sisters, Kathleen Greiner of Kalkaska, Patricia Greiner-Ash of Kewadin and Susan Greiner of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands; her sister-in-law, Rhonda Greiner of Elk Rapids; her cherished nephews and nieces, Ryan, Al, Travis, Michael, John and James, Jayna (Steve), Karisa, Tara, Anna, Jamie, Gina and Michelle; along with aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her brother Charles in 1992; her maternal and paternal grandparents; and her ex-husband, George Elek.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 16, at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Kewadin, with the Rev. Father James Holtz officiating.
The family will meet friends at Sacred Heart Parish Hall in Elk Rapids following the services."
