Michael "Mitch Ayoub of Needham died Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2005.

He was 83.


Born in Boston and raised in Cambridge, Mr. Ayoub graduated from Cambridge Rindge Technical High School in 1941, and enlisted in the Army Air Forces as an aviation cadet in 1943. Soon after, he was sent overseas due to an emergency need for navigators. He served in the South Pacific, as well as Japan, and was discharged in June 1946 as a second lieutenant.


He received several awards and medals, including the American Defense Theater Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal, Asia-Pacific Campaign Medal and several citations.


After returning from World War II, he attended Northeastern

University in the evening division, receiving bachelor of science degrees in both business administration and mechanical engineering in 1957. He began his career at American Science and Engineering in Boston and went on to engineering management positions at Sylvania, Raytheon and General Electric. His career in the defense industry involved work on guided missile systems, weaponry and research satellites.


Mr. Ayoub was an active member of St. Mary s Antiochian Orthodox Church in Cambridge as a board member and Parish Council president for one term. Additionally, he served as a member of the board of directors of the American Arabic Benevolent Association for several years, and was president from 1989 through 1991.


Mr. Ayoub was host of AABA's Sunday morning radio ogram, "The Arabic Hour," dedicated to the culture of the Arabic community, for many years. He worked on behalf of Disabled American Veterans and was an active member of the Nicholas G. Beram Veterans Association. He married his wartime sweetheart in 1947, and they moved to Needham in 1957, where they made their home for 48 years.


He leaves his wife, Wadia Bezreh Ayoub; his children, his daughter-in-law, eight grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.


He was the father of the late Robert Ayoub.


Burial was in Needham Cemetery.
