He was born Oct. 16, 1923, to John and Catherine (Dreiling) Hammerschmidt in Hays.
He graduated from high school at Victoria and came to Liberal in 1958. He was a meat cutter for Ideal Foods and later at Safeway for many years. He then worked for Seward County Landfill and retired in 1984. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Liberal.
He married Kathleen P. O'Grady June 15, 1946 in Hays. She died March 25, 1995.
Survivors include three sons, Rick Hammerschmidt and wife, Billie, Fort Wayne, Ind.; Tom Hammerschmidt and wife, Judy, Houston, Texas; and Jim Hammerschmidt and wife, Jim Ann, Kismet; one daughter, Judy Morgan and husband, Frank, Midland, Texas; one sister, Carolyn Kisner, Hays; seven grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Miller Chapel, Liberal, with Deacon Erasmo Rodriguez presiding. Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the St. Fidelis Cemetery in Victoria, with the Rev. Frank Ginko presiding. Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. until service time Wednesday at Miller Mortuary in Liberal.
