From NYS Adj.-Gen. report 1903: "Kellogg, Charles J. - Age, 26 [sic] years. Enlisted, August 9, 1862, at De Ruyter, [Madison County, NY,] to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. H, [114 NYSV,] August 14, 1862; deserted, August 17, 1864, at hospital, Rochester, [Monroe Co.,] NY." The fact that he was issued a pension in 1912 indicates that his record of desertion was reversed.
