Raynald began his Vietnam tour 1 July 1965 and was assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade, 16th Armor, Company D.

It was believed that the political-military headquarters of the communists 4th military region that controlled Viet Cong were in an underground bunker system in the Ho Bo woods. This was reported through the interrogation of prisoners and aerial views of the area. Due to this information provided, a search and destroy mission was developed in January 1966. During Operation Crimp, Michael and 21 other soldiers were killed.
