Mrs. Portuondo wrote several short stories in her younger days and in 1906 her book, "True Historical Stories for Children," was published. Her grandfather served as Governor of Illinois from 1856 to 1860.
A native of Bellleville, she was born November 23, 1867, and was a daughter of the late Judge Charles Wait and Rhode Thomas, nee Bissell, also natives of Belleville. Her father died in 1906, one week after he had been nominated for the Illinois State Supreme Court.
She attended Ursuline Academy at Springfield and Loretto Academy at Nearing, Ky.
Mrs. Portuondo married Dr. Buenaventura H. Portuondo, well-known Catholic layman and a member of the Knights of St. Gregory, at Belleville April 11, 1893. He died March 9, 1939. Dr. Portuondo served for many years as chairman of the St. Clair County Chapter of the American Red Cross and was well-known for his philanthropic work in the field of medicine.
She is survived by five children;

Mrs. Portuondo was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Third Order of St. Francis of St. Peter's Cathedral.
Funeral services Monday from Bux Funeral Home to St. Peter's Cathedral. Burial in Green Mount Cemetery.
