Born in Belmont County, Ohio, Captain Ault was a graduate of Bellaire High School and the United States Naval Academy. His Naval career was one of accomplishment. In addition to being a Naval Aviator, he was involved early on in Navy space research. He served as Commanding Officer of the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Coral Sea (CVA-43). He is probably best known for the "Ault Report" which provided the impetus for the formation of the U.S. Naval Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN) at NAS Miramar in 1969. The auditorium at NAS Fallon Nevada Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center bears his name. He was the father of five children: Jeffrey, Laurel Ann, Jon, Jerald, and Jan.
