Dr. Alden S. Thompson, 83, died at 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, at his home in Carterville. Dr. Thompson will be returned to his birthplace in Gloucester, Mass. for burial at the family burial site in the Oak Grove Cemetery. He was the last of five children born to anna Sjostrom Thompson and Frederick John Thompson, a noted Gloucester seafaring family, on July 22, 1916.

Dr. Thompson graduated from Bucknell Universiy in 1938, with a master's degree in biology and from Temple University Medical School in 1942. he was a resident in pathology at new York City Hospital until 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II for two years as a medical doctor in the Pacific.

After the war, he worked as a pathologist in new York City, Dayton, OH. and Ann Arbor, Mich.. He became the first permanent pathologist to the Herrin Hospital in 1968 until his retirement in December 1984.

He is survived by his wife, Sarath Thompson; two daughters; his son; three stepchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Joan Groulx Thompson; his parents; his brother and three sisters.
