He was born in Kentucky.
At about age 20 he joined the U.S. Military, Captain Lanceford's Company, the U. S. R. C. Missouri Home Guard. His Rank in was as a Private and at his death his Rank Out was as a 2nd Sargeant.
The family story of his death is that he was ambushed during the war at his Father's saddle and harness shop in Bolivar. It is believed that his Father was an intelligence officer for the North and this made his Shop a good place to ambush Union sympathizers and Soldiers.
